Environmental Sustainability – Means of Survival
Environmental sustainability involves making decisions and taking actions that are in the interests of protecting the natural world, thereby preserving the capability of the natural world to support human life. For decades our economic approach and its effects on the environment has not been sustainable. The planet’s capability to sustain life is diminished and fading. It is an important topic, since people are realising the full impact that businesses and individuals have on the environment. Although the long term implications of this serious issue are not yet fully understood, it is generally agreed that proven effects require an immediate response.
Environmental sustainability is not only about reducing the amount of waste you produce or using less energy, but it is concerned with developing processes that will lead to businesses and households becoming completely sustainable in the future. Environmental sustainability forces businesses and households to look beyond making short term gains. The key is looking at the long term impact we are having on the natural world. We need to consider not only the immediate impact our actions have on the environment, but also long term implications.
Considerations for the supply of products and services should cover the whole life cycle, taking used materials and energy into account. For example, when manufacturing a product, you need to look at the environmental impact of the products entire lifecycle, from development to disposal, before finalising your designs. You also need to take used raw materials, by-products in manufacturing, energy consumption of manufacturing and transportation over the whole supply chain into account. Moreover, durability and recyclability are major factors. Most importantly, creating environmental sustainability does not negatively impact on a business and households ability to succeed. In the long term, benefits by the reduction of expenses, increased value and competitiveness are achievable.
Acting now will ensure the long-term survival of the environment, businesses and households the like.
